Entries are now being accepted for the 30th Lisburn Half Marathon, 10km Road Race and 3km Fun Run, which will take place at 6.45pm on Wednesday 20th June 2012.The launch of the 2012 Coca-Cola Lisburn Half Marathon, 10km Road Race and 3km Fun Run took place at Coca-Cola’s all-Ireland facility in Lisburn.
Organiser, Lisburn City Council, event sponsor Coca-Cola HBC Ireland and media promoter U105, are looking forward to celebrating this 30th milestone with thousands of runners.
Councillor Thomas Beckett, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee, speaking at the launch, said: “This annual event, which is now in its 30th year, is one of Northern Ireland’s largest sporting participation events. I would like to say thank you to event sponsor Coca-Cola and supporting sponsors U105 and Lagan Valley LeisurePlex. The Half Marathon is one of the Council’s event highlights and provides runners of all abilities with the opportunity to get together and hopefully run for charity with the 10km Road Race or 3km Fun Run option.
“Thousands line the streets of Lisburn to cheer on the professional, competitive, and recreational roadrunners as well as those simply running for fun. Running a half marathon is both a physical and mental challenge and many people opt for this in preparation for a full marathon. The Council would like to see all the participants pass the finishing line in ‘personal best times’ and hopes that their supporters will get into the spirit, enjoying the activities and atmosphere on the evening,” he concluded.
Coca-Cola HBC Ireland has partnered with Lisburn City Council on this event for many years and been title sponsor since 2007.
Mr. Marcel Martin, General Manager of Coca-Cola HBC Ireland, speaking about the partnership with the Council, said: “As a local business, Coca-Cola has a long standing relationship with Lisburn City Council and the city’s residents, and is proud to be part of an event which is focussed just as much on community spirit as it is on promoting a healthy and active lifestyle, an ethos mirrored by Coca-Cola’s commitment to give back to - and be a real part of - the local community, whilst providing an opportunity for everyone, irrespective of ability or age, to get out and get active."
"I would like to wish all the organisers and participants every success for this year’s Coca-Cola Lisburn Half Marathon and here’s to the event’s continued success for the next 30 years."
£1 from each entry will go to this year’s Mayoral Charity, Lisburn 2gether Special Olympics Club.
Also at the launch, the Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Brian Heading, added: "I would like to encourage as many residents and runners from further afield to participate in one of the three races offered by this annual event. My Mayoral Charity, Lisburn 2gether Special Olympics Club, will benefit from each entry and I would ask those participating to raise funds for my charity, if they do not already have one in mind. This charity provides the opportunity for individuals from Lisburn who have an intellectual disability to participate in their communities and develop belief in themselves."
To register for any of the three races simply log on to: www.lisburnhalfmarathon.com and complete the online application form. The website also has a downloadable training schedule geared towards beginners interested in running the Half Marathon.
Printed application forms will be available from Lisburn City Council leisure facilities, local sports shops, Sport NI and various outlets displaying the Coca-Cola Lisburn Half Marathon poster.
